After the great fire of 1763, the city was rebuilt in Neoclassical style. Under Catherine the Great, the downtown was thoroughly reconstructed. |

Kalyazin appeared in the 12th century as a sloboda, or the settlement for people relieved from paying taxes. The town's importance grew significantly with the foundation of the Makaryevsky monastery on the opposite bank of the Volga in the 15th century. This abbey used to be the most conspicuous landmark of Kalyazin and comprised numerous buildings of historic interest, including a refectory from 1525. Several quarters of the 18-19 centuries development are preserved in the town. |

Andrew the Big, brother of the Grand Duke Ivan III of Moscow made a great contribution to the development of the town in the 15th century by building the Intercession (Pokrovskiy) Monastery (later destroyed by bolsheviks), the town cathedral and red brick royal chambers. During the 16th century Uglich flourished under the reign of Yuri of Uglich, Ivan the Terrible's only brother. The town of Uglich played a fatal role in russian history because of the event when the youngest son of Ivan the Terrible, 10-year old Dmitry Ivanovich was found dead with his throat cut in the palace courtyard in 1591. Dimitry was the last prince of the ancient Rurik dynasty and his his death provoked the dynastic and political crisis known as the Time of Troubles. |

Show tour descriptionThe ancient Vladimir tract, or the Vladimir Highway, known as the Vladimirka was a road leading east from Moscow to Vladimir and Nizhny Novgorod. Its length was about 190 kilometers. The road has been mentioned in documents since the Middle Ages, when it connected the political capital of Vladimir-Suzdal. It was by this road that the Muscovite merchants travelled to the Makariev Fair. In connection with the ceremonial transfer of the Theotokos of Vladimir from Vladimir to Moscow in 1395, one Russian chronicler referred to the route as "the greatest of roads". Our excursion will take you to Mocow Oblast little towns, Suvorov Mansion and will bring to life the history of Pushkin's trips and whatnot.

Suzdal — Vladimir

| 8.00 Transfer to Vladimir (~180 km) located on the Klyazma River, 200 kilometers (124 mi) to the east of Moscow.(2-3 hours’ drive) The first mention of Vladimir, a fort in the Rostov-Suzdal principality founded by Vladimir Monomakh of Kiev, appears in the Primary Chronicle in 1108, but they believe that the city is much more older. A lot of Russian, German, and Georgian masons worked on Vladimir's white stone cathedrals, towers, and palaces. Unlike other examples of northern architecture, their exterior was artfully carved with high relief stone sculptures. Only three of these constructions stand today: the Assumption Cathedral, the Cathedral of St. Demetrios, and the Golden Gate. The city's Golden Age, which lasted until the Mongol invasion of Russia, when it was totally overrun. After the Mongols, Vladimir never fully recovered, but nevertheless Vladimir of today has kept its fascinating ancient streets with small two-storey houses and square buildings. |

| 09.00 Transfer to Suzdal (~ 30 km). First mentioned in 1024, Suzdal was made the capital of the Rostov-Suzdal principality by Yury Dolgoruky in the first half of the 12th century. In 1157-1158 Vladimir was made the capital, and from then on the principality was known as Vladimir-Suzdal. Today, the town is an important tourist center in Vladimir region, featuring many outstanding examples of old Russian architecture — most of them churches, monasteries and wooden houses. The Cathedral of the Nativity in Suzdal is one of the eight White Monuments of Vladimir and Suzdal, a World Heritage Site. |

Uglitch — Myshkin

| 08.00 Transfer to Uglitch (~ 260 km). Uglitch, a small town with a great history, was first mentioned in the chronicles in the 12th century. Andrew the Big, brother of the Grand Duke Ivan III of Moscow made a great contribution to the development of the town in the 15th century by building the Intercession (Pokrovskiy) Monastery (later destroyed by bolsheviks), the town cathedral and red brick royal chambers. During the 16th century Uglitch flourished under the reign of Yuri of Uglitch, Ivan the Terrible's only brother. The town of Uglitch played a fatal role in russian history because of the event when the youngest son of Ivan the Terrible, 10-year old Dmitry Ivanovich was found dead with his throat cut in the palace courtyard in 1591. Dimitry was the last prince of the ancient Rurik dynasty and his his death provoked the dynastic and political crisis known as the Time of Troubles. |

| 09.00 Transfer to Myshkin (~ 40 km). Fanciful Myshkin (Mouse's Town literally) is a small and quiet provincial town situated on the Volga river. Surrounded by a pine forest, the town is a real living antiquity of the Golden Ring, with its old wooden houses with fancy turrets and carved architraves, its churches and Volga ferry. The ancient legend says that many centuries ago prince Mstislavsky stopped for the night in the woods and was awakened by a mouse running by. This event saved prince's life because a venomous snake had lurked in the grass, ready to bite him. So the prince founded a chapel on that place, and named the new village Myshkin (mysh = mouse in russian). In the XVIII century Myshkin was granted the status of a town according to Catherine II decree, and by the end of XIX century it became one of the richest little towns on the Volga river. |
| 10.00 A walk around Myshkin including a trip to the only Mouse Museum in the world. Mice made of various materials made using diverse techniques form a unique exposition. You will also visit Russian Valenki Museum (valenki — russian felt boots), the only Museum of Wood Architecture in the Yaroslavl region, and the Museum of Local Lore and History with a smithy, a potter workshop and a glass workshop. You can attend the Museum of Russian Vodka if you want to. |

You will also pay a visit to old churches of St. Nicholas Nadein and Elijah the Prophet which have the Golden Ring's most impressive looking frescoes. The centre of the city is a peculiar example of the 17th-early 19th centuries Russian architecture. There is a fire tower in the centre which is a symbol of Kostroma. |

The only boat that has survived is The Fortuna made according to the local legend by Peter himself. It is kept in a building constructed specifically for this purpose in 1803.The ensemble of the estate also includes the White palace, the Triumphal Arch, the exhibiting hall Rotonda, where usual Peter's assemblies take place. |
